Nuno founded the gallery and has established an international program of Contemporary Art. Nuno Centeno Gallery began as Reflexus Contemporary Art, situated in a townhouse with three spaces, opening in March 2007 in Porto. Quickly gained visibility and reputation by discovering a new scene in town. Alongside Serralves Museum and the artist-run A Certain Lack of Coherence, the gallery has played an important role in showcasing Contemporary Art in Porto. In 2009 the gallery expanded, moving to larger premises. The name changed to Nuno Centeno Gallery in January 2011 and started to represent a group of emerging and established international artists that made the gallery’s reputation. Nuno is the son of the well known Portuguese artist Sobral Centeno.
In 2016, with less than 10 years of career, Nuno Centeno was nominated by Artnet as the “Europe’s 10 Most Respected Art Dealers”. In 2018, won the Frieze New York Focus Prize and judges described the presentation as “bold” and “showcasing the work of artists with an interesting dialogue”, resulting in a “poised freshness”.
The same year, in September, he was selected by the Apollo International Art Magazine as “40 Under 40 Europe 2018”, a magazine dedicated to 40 of the most influential and talented people in the art world who are based in Europe and under the age of 40.
Nuno Centeno has been participating in major art fairs and events such as Frieze London & New York / Independent Brussels & New York / Miami Art Basel / ARCO Madrid & Lisboa / Artissima / Art Brussels / Zona Maco Mexico / Liste Basel / CONDO London and CONDO São Paulo / Friend Of A Friend Warsaw / among other collaborations.
The gallery aims to contribute to a healthy ecosystem, where the artist, dealer and collector run in the same direction. Nuno Centeno also took part in the art fair selection committee for ARCO Lisboa and integrates the Oporto city advisory board for the cultural and art department. Alongside with the gallery, Nuno is founder/director of the Artist Book Gallery (an art gallery specialising in single edition artist’s books) and Co-founder of The Spot (an outdoor project).
